This is an evergreen tree which grows to heights of 2-15m (6-45ft). The trunk is often very wide near the base and the branches are often gnarly and twisted. The bark is reddish brown and scaly, with some of the scales shedding to reveal bright red under the bark. The needles of this tree are a dark yellowish green, flat with a pointed tip and twisted along twigs. The seeds are a bright red berry which is poisonous to humans. In woodturning this tree has a very distinctive colour and grain. It is a deep golden brown colour with a brown line running through it. This tree grows in abundance in the Irish countryside.
